Stater Bros. Turns 70

COLTON, Calif. -- Stater Bros. Markets today begins what's to be a yearlong celebration to mark its 70th anniversary of service to Southern California, which started August 17, 1936, when twin brothers Cleo and Leo Stater opened the first Stater Bros. Market in Yucaipa, California.

At that time, the Stater brothers established a basic business philosophy that has been a tradition throughout the company's 70-year history ... "name brand merchandise ... at the lowest prices ... friendly service."

To mark its 70th year in business, Stater Bros. has planned an array of commemorative events:

- Stater Bros.' new 2.1 million-square-foot corporate offices and distribution center complex is under construction at the former Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, California. The Corporate Offices are scheduled to open in May 2007 and the Distribution Center is scheduled to open in August 2007.

- The retailer plans to open four new full-service supermarkets, including a 70th anniversary supermarket in Highland, California.

- Stater Bros. will remodel 25 of its existing supermarkets. The remodeled stores will include expanded produce, meat, service deli, and bakery departments, Stater Bros. Super Rx Pharmacies.

- Customer appreciation and food sampling events will be held throughout the year and especially during the company's 4-week anniversary sale to be held from September 27 through October 24.

Stater Bros. operates 162 supermarkets, and also owns and operates Heartland Farms, provider of Knudsen Dairy products to Southern California, and had sales in 2005 of $3.4 billion.
