Stop & Shop to Send Thousands of Turkeys to Needy

QUINCY, Mass. -- The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. said yesterday it plans to deliver more than 16,000 turkeys during the holiday season to hunger relief organizations in its selling areas of New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and New Jersey.

"Our Turkey Express program will allow [these] organizations...to continue to help those in need by providing them with a Thanksgiving meal," said Stop & Shop's e.v.p. of operations Bill Cummings. For instance, helped by the Army and the Family Readiness Group, a military family support organization, Stop & Shop will bring 1,000 turkeys to Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin food bank on Long Island, N.Y., for distribution to needy families.

Each year, Stop & Shop contributes more than $12 million in product and financial support to various food banks in the Northeast. As well as the Turkey Express program, the retailer runs the Food For Friends campaign, which will raise over $1 million this year for more than 300 local hunger relief charities in six states.

"In the United States, 5 million people live at or below the poverty level, and nearly a third of them are children," added Cummings. "Providing meals to those who need help is a cause that directly impacts each community in which we operate, and gives each store the opportunity to form a lasting partnership with a local food pantry and make a difference."
