Supermarket Names Bad Check Writers On Marquee

EASTON, Pa. - An independent supermarket operator here is shaming those who write bad checks by placing their names up in lights on the marquee in front of his store.

Vic Ricci, owner of Park Avenue Market, told the Associated Press it is his way of getting back at customers who bounce checks. He started the practice after an infrequent customer bounced a check for $200. He tried phoning the man, but the number printed on the check had been disconnected. When he went to the man's home, the man said he desperately needed food to feed his family.

Ricci told the man to call him every few weeks so he wouldn't be forgotten, but the customer never did. That's when Ricci cleared a spot on his marquee normally used to place weekly specials and put the customer's name up. A few days later the customer showed up and gave Ricci $100. Ricci said he wouldn't remove the name until he got all of his money back.
