SUPERVALU Names New Eastern Region President

MINNEAPOLIS -- SUPERVALU INC. announced today that Richard Lane has been named president of the company's Eastern region, which is based in Richmond, Va. He will report to Mike Jackson, SUPERVALU executive vice president, president and COO, Distribution Food Companies. Lane will replace Gary Zimmerman, who will retire effective February 22, 2003.

"As we expand SUPERVALU's presence in the distribution arena, we need to maintain our solid position as a leading grocery wholesaler," Jackson said. "With Richard's tremendous supply chain management experience, he will be able to maximize growth opportunities, while continuing to drive efficiencies and lower operating expenses within our distribution facilities."

Lane, currently executive vice president, Supply Chain, for SUPERVALU's Eastern region, brings considerable industry and supply chain experience to the position. Before joining SUPERVALU in 2001, he was executive vice president and chief operating officer for Ameriserve, Inc. With Ameriserve, he was responsible for domestic and international operations with revenues of $9 billion generated from servicing 37,000 quick serve and casual restaurants throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Previous to his experience with Ameriserve, Lane was senior vice president, Operations, for Pepsico Food Systems. He also held several positions of increasing responsibility with Frito-Lay between 1973 and 1993.

Lane holds a bachelor's degree from Texas Technological University and an MBA from the University of Dallas.
