Supervalu U Launches Online Course Library

Supervalu University has unveiled an online library of supermarket-specific courses designed to help grocers enhance their businesses.

Funded in part by a $400,000 grant from the State of Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development as part of an initiative that also created a Food Retailing Merchandising, Marketing and Management (FRMMM) certificate and degree program at Concordia University, St. Paul in 2008, the online library uses both classroom and online learning opportunities, and is accessible by traditional college students and job-experienced adults seeking to go back to school to complete a specialized degree.

“The first year of the FRMMM certificate and degree program partnership between SUPERVALU and Concordia, St. Paul was a tremendous success, and we’re excited about the opportunity to further enhance our offerings to the industry through this new online curriculum,” said Christine Walsh, director of independent marketing and education for the Minneapolis-based retailer and distributor.

The 16 courses available are based on the most popular instructor-led courses at Supervalu’s training and development arm, said Walsh, adding that there are plans to add at least six more courses in the next six months.

In addition to financial courses that help retailers better understand what drives sales and profitability in their stores, the curriculum includes classes on retail operations, human resource and retail management, marketing, and merchandising.

The courses can be accessed by Supervalu associates and affiliates via the SVHarbor portal and can be made available to other companies via the Internet or CDs. People who attend 15 hours of Supervalu University-approved courses are now able to earn one accredited, academic credit at Concordia University.
