Tops, Martin's Give to Five Local Salvation Army Units

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- Tops Markets and Martin's Super Food Stores here are contributing a variety of children's toys worth nearly $40,000 to five Salvation Army Units in New York State. Additionally, the stores' annual three-week "Hope for the Holidays" program raised a total of $78,000 for distribution to the Salvation Army units in the markets where the money was raised. The funds will go toward food, warm clothes, and toys for needy families.

"Every holiday season our customers open their hearts with generosity, and if it were not for their overwhelming support, we wouldn't be able to help those in our community most in need," said Tops e.v.p. and g.m. Max Henderson Jr. "We thank each and every one of our customers who contributed to a program that brightens the holiday season for so many families."

Toy and check presentations were held in Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, Elmira and Ithaca, N.Y., with local tops/Martin's and Salvation Army representatives in attendance. The Buffalo unit received $15,000 in toys and $41,600 in customer cash donations, while the Rochester unit got $10,000 in toys and $12,800 in cash. The Batavia, Elmira, and Ithaca units each received $5,000 in toys and $1,000, $1,100, and $500 in cash, respectively.

"Hope for the Holidays" ran this year from Nov. 19 to Dec. 9. Tops and Martin's customers are encouraged to contribute to the campaign by using tear-off coupons at the cash registers. Customers have the choice of a voucher for the food bank and/or Salvation Army in their respective communities, where all monies are ultimately donated.

Tops, one of four retail-operating companies under Ahold in the USA and is a division of Giant Food Stores in Carlisle, Pa., currently operates Tops Markets and Martin's Super Food Stores in New York and Pennsylvania.
