Tops Units' Conversion to Martin's Completed

BATAVIA, N.Y. -- The six-and-a-half-month conversion of a Tops supermarket to a Martin's Food Market here was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony late last week.

The 80,000-square-foot store stayed open throughout the conversion. One hundred and twenty employees were hired, bringing the number of full- and part-time workers to 330, according to local press reports.

Among the changes to the renovated store: a redesigned interior, a sit-down cafe, a salad bar, and 10 self-scanning checkout lanes.

Tops originally built the store in 1988 and made it larger six years later. The conversion marks the third changeover of a Tops store to a Martin's location in western New York state.

Tops and Martin's are both banners of Ahold-owned Giant Food stores.
