Trader Joe's To Bow First Pittsburgh Site

MONROVIA, Calif. -- Trader Joe's here is coming to Pittsburgh's East Liberty section of the city. The 250-stores retailer, which operates in 20 mostly West Coast and East Coast states, will open its first Pittsburgh location before year's end.

The well-respected, unique retailer's arrival will further enliven the urban neighborhood, which is undergoing a resurgence and which also is home to a popular Whole Foods Market, a Giant Eagle, and a year-old Shop 'n Save, the last of which is among the 20 units being divested by corporate parent Supervalu.

The Trader Joe's store is expected to open in the fall. A corporate spokeswoman declined to specify whether Trader Joe's plans include multiple Pittsburgh locations.

Greensboro, N.C.-based Fresh Market Inc. also said this week it is seeking locations in Pittsburgh, and expects to open stores in the area in 2007 or 2008, in the northern and southern suburbs of the Steel City.
