Tsunami Relief Roundup: ShopRite, Supervalu, Redner's

ShopRite will add a $100,000 donation to money raised at the nearly 200 ShopRite stores during a month long fund-raising effort.

The retail cooperative's contribution and the funds donated by customers beginning Jan. 9 will be divided among the Salvation Army South Asia Disaster Fund and the American Red Cross International Response Fund.

"In the aftermath of something so horrific, there exist no borders, no divides. We become neighbors caring for neighbors in need no matter where they may be," said Thomas Infusino, chairman and c.e.o. of Wakefern Food Corp., the marketing, merchandising and distribution arm of ShopRite supermarkets.

Both in-store signage and ads in ShopRite's circular informs loyal customers that, for their convenience, donations are being accepted at the stores' check out, which offer customers an easy and convenient way to contribute to relief efforts.

Wakefern is the nation's largest retailer-owned cooperative, comprised of 39 members who independently own and operate supermarkets under the ShopRite banner.

Supervalu said yesterday it would make a monetary contribution to relief efforts provided through its foundation and an employee matching program.
The wholesaler will arrange for an immediate cash donation of $50,000 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund through its foundation. The foundation has also committed up to an additional $50,000 to match the contributions of the more than 55,000 employees across its retail and distribution operations. Supervalu anticipates that combined giving will be in excess of $150,000.

"Supervalu and our employees are committed to helping those touched by this tragedy, and the American Red Cross International Response Fund is uniquely capable of responding to these types of catastrophic events," said Jeff Noddle, chairman and c.e.o.

Reading, Pa.-based Redner's Warehouse Markets is also conducting a four-week fundraising campaign that will provide a monetary donation for tsunami disaster efforts currently being conducted by the American Red Cross.

All Redner's Warehouse Markets and sister Quick Shoppes convenience stores are offering consumers the opportunity to donate toward relief efforts through Feb. 5. Customers will be able to write a short message or their name on a Red Cross card for a $1 donation, which will be hung throughout the store, and are also being encouraged to drop their loose change into donation buckets that will be available at the store's cash registers.

Redner's will present the donation on behalf if its customers to the American Red Cross' International Response Fund.
