UK Food Recalls Hundreds of Products in Cancer Scare

LONDON -- Britain's food safety watchdog advised people Friday not to eat some 350 food products that it said have been inadvertently contaminated with a potentially cancer-causing dye.

The watchdog said it is working with the food industry and local authorities to make sure that all the affected products are removed from the shelves and is tracing any foods that may be contaminated.

The dye, Sudan I, was in a batch of chili powder used by British tea and pickle maker Premier Foods Plc in a large consignment of Crosse & Blackwell Worcester Sauce. The sauce was added as an ingredient to at least 359 products from supermarkets and top food brands.

"Sudan I could contribute to an increased risk of cancer," Food Standards Agency (FSA) chief executive Jon Bell said in a statement on the watchdog's Web site.

"However, at the levels present, the risk is likely to be very small but it is sensible to avoid eating any more. There is no risk of immediate ill health," he added.
