United Supermarkets Opens New Upscale Unit

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Regional operator United Supermarkets, Ltd. here opened the second Market Street format in its hometown yesterday. The store, which the company is calling "a third-generation Market Street," is the sixth under the upscale banner in its portfolio of 48 stores.

The new 67,000 square-foot-store, located in the southwest part of the city at 98th Street and Quaker Avenue, replaces the company's oldest Lubbock store, a much smaller site bearing the "United" brand in a strip shopping center about 16 blocks away. The new Market Street will create more than 300 additional jobs for the city, as it employs almost 500 persons, said the company.

It is considered a "third-generation" Market Street store, with a new look and feel that focuses less on decor and more on people and products, according to the company. New additions include a smoothie shop with a variety of solutions -- including healthy wheat grass shots -- in the same venue as the popular Peet's Coffee and Tea Shop.

The new store also boasts an expanded working sushi bar, while the bakery features a chocolate fountain and will include more innovative items in the near future.

Also featured is an expanded array of health foods and supplements. A Living Well specialist will be on staff at the store from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, and new product lines ranging from natural makeup, to aromatherapy, to body care will be added.

United Supermarkets first opened a Market Street format in Lubbock in March 2001 at 50th and Indiana in the central part of the city. Other Market Street stores are in Amarillo, Colleyville, McKinney, and Wichita Falls.

The company operates a total of 48 stores in 26 Texas communities under three formats --United Supermarkets, Market Street, and Super Mercado. It is in its 90th year of operation.
