Wakefern Now Accepting ExpressPay from American Express
ELIZABETH, N.J. -- Wakefern Food Corp. here, the merchandising and distribution arm of ShopRite supermarkets and owner of New England-based PriceRite stores, said yesterday that ExpressPay from American Express, a contactless payment option featuring a secure computer chip powered by radio frequency technology, is now accepted at all 230 ShopRite and PriceRite stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
The companies called the rollout "the largest deployment of ExpressPay in the supermarket [channel] to date." A previous installation of ExpressPay, to Meijer stores, involved about 170 locations, according to American Express spokeswoman Rosa Alfonso.
Earlier this month Wakefern said it had rolled out MasterCard's PayPass system in its stores.
Users can wave an ExpressPay-enabled card or device at a cashier's ExpressPay-enabled reader. Most purchases under $25 won't require a customer's signature on the receipt. ShopRite will also continue to accept traditional magnetic-stripe payment cards.
In June 2005, New York-based American Express became the first issuer to launch contactless cards nationally, with the introduction of Blue from American Express with the ExpressPay feature.
