Wegmans Awards 2006 Employee Scholarships

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here has awarded 1,416 employees from across the company scholarships to offset the cost of college tuition. The grocer will pay out a total of $4.6 million for the 2006-2007 academic year to new recipients and previous scholarship recipients still attending school. Since it began in 1984, the Wegmans Employee Scholarship Program has provided over $59 million in tuition assistance to more than 19,000 associates.

Part-time employees can receive up to $1,500 a year for four years, while full-timers are eligible to receive a maximum $2,200 a year for four years. To be eligible, associates have to work a minimum number of hours over a specified period of time and must have both good grades in school and a good work record. Although recipients can select whichever educational and career path they want, many have gone on to work Wegmans after college graduation.

An outside committee of college admissions professionals and a team from Wegmans review the applications to decide who qualifies for the scholarships. The external committee evaluates such criteria as SAT scores, grades, and extracurricular activities, and the Wegmans committee judges work performance.
