Wegmans Chairman Donates $8 Million to Local College for Nursing School

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. chairman Robert B. Wegman has given $8 million to St. John Fisher College, an educational institution here in Wegmans' hometown, to establish a school of nursing. The donation was the biggest in the school's history.

"I am concerned about the future of health care, particularly the cost, and believe that addressing the nursing shortage is an important goal," said Wegman in a statement posted yesterday on the college's site. "I also see this as an investment in our community, since many St. John Fisher College students stay in the Rochester area after graduating."

Although the college has had a fully accredited nursing department for 16 years, the planned Wegmans School of Nursing would have its own dean, department chairs, and faculty. A new building will also be constructed to house the school and accommodate its future growth.

In January 2005 Wegman donated $5 million for the creation of the Wegmans School of Pharmacy.
