Wegmans Continues Maryland Expansion

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wegmans Food Markets here has made a deal with Prince George's County in Maryland to build a store near the town of Largo, according to a published account. The parties are expected to officially announce the deal today in a joint news conference.

Wegmans last week said it would build a store in Anne Arundel County in the state. The retailer already has a store in Hunt Valley, Md.

The Largo store will anchor Woodmore Towne Centre, a mixed-used development that will include 750,000 square feet of retail and 1 million square feet of office space, reported the Washington Post. The site additionally has 950 single-family homes and condos.

Partly urban, partly rural Prince George's county has been largely shunned by high-end retailers. A study in contrasts, the county logged a record number of murders last year, and is home to a struggling school system, but it also includes expensive gated communities and an increasing number of million-dollar homes.

"People are recognizing that money can and will be made in Prince George's County," said Arthur Turner, chairman of the Economic Development Committee for the Prince George's County Chamber of Commerce, in comments published in the Washington Post.

The chain also operates two stores, in Virginia, in Fairfax and Sterling.
