Wegmans School of Nursing Building Dedicated

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Officals at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, N.Y. held a dedication ceremony Monday for its newest academic building, the Wegmans School of Nursing, according to local press reports.

The late Robert B. Wegman, who was chairman of family-owned Wegman Food Markets at the time of his death in April 2006, gave $8 million -- the largest gift in the college's history -- to fund the school, which officially opened for classes Sept. 4 with St. John Fisher's largest undergraduate nursing class to date. Wegman gave the gift to address critical shortages in nursing care. The college has offered a nursing program for over 16 years.

The 41,000-square-foot building features classrooms, teaching laboratories, computer labs, offices for faculty and administration, and the Wellness Center, a combination medical and mental health center.

St. John Fisher president Donald Bain and Wegman family members were present at the ceremony.
