Weis Markets Unleashes ‘Paws for Pets’ Program

Weis Markets today launched “Weis Paws for Pets,” a monthlong, chainwide program giving shoppers the opportunity to donate pet food and supplies to local animal shelters. The brand-new program will run through the end of the month in all Weis Markets' stores, including the grocer's King's and Mr. Z's locations.

"With the slow economy, we're hearing about the increasing number of pets that are turning up in pet shelters, resulting in an increased need for pet food and pet supplies," noted Weis vice chairman Jonathan Weis. "Through Paws for Pets, our associates and customers will have the opportunity to support 75 local pet shelters at their peak time of the year. In addition, about 40 select stores will host pet adopt-a-thon events."

The company has worked with local pet shelters to assemble a list of needed items, among them dog, cat, puppy and kitten food; kitty litter; collars, harnesses and leashes; toys and treats; pet shampoos; nail clippers, pet brushes; combs; food and water bowls; dishwashing liquid; bleach; new mops and brooms; towels/washcloths; and powder-free latex gloves. List of items will be posted in stores to help shoppers pick appropriate donation items.

After customers buy the items they want to donate, they can place the objects in a specially marked donation collection cart near the checkout area. Each donor can add a paw print sticker to the store's Paws for Pets Window Poster.
