WGA Awards $4,000 in Scholarships
ARLINGTON, Va. - The Women Grocers of America (WGA), an information and advisory arm of the National Grocers Association, has awarded its annual scholarships through the WGA's Mary Macey Scholarship Program to help students planning a career in the independent sector of the grocery industry.
The four students chosen to receive scholarships this year are Jody Hanneman of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., who was sponsored by Rapids County Market; Mary G. Hayes of Troy, Tenn., who works in the accounting department of regional independent grocer E.W. James & Sons Supermarkets and was a Mary Macey Scholarship recipient last year, as well; Cheryl Saluga of Boardman, Ohio, who is v.p. of human resources at Columbiana Foods, Inc., which runs three stores under the Giant Eagle banner; and Eric Vahling of Teutopolis, Ill., supervisor/produce department manager at Martin's Save-A-Lot in Charleston, Ill., who was sponsored by Martin's IGA Plus in Effingham, Ill., which operates four stores.
One of the WGA's chief missions, as set forth in the NGA's Ten Keys to Retail Success, is to recruit and retain the next generation of quality managers and entrepreneurs, which it does through the scholarship program. Funds are raised through a raffle held at the NGA National Convention and through donations from WGA members and companies in the grocery industry. "Our hope is we have encouraged people to stay in the industry," NGA director of administration and WGA liaison Anne Wintersteen told Progressive Grocer.
According to Wintersteen, the scholarships honor the memory of an active member of WGA who was the wife of Utah independent grocer Waldo Macey and mother of retired Macey's Food Store chairman and c.e.o. Ken Macey. Past recipients have included Lee Ann James, president of E.W. James & Sons Supermarkets in Union City, Tenn., and Donald Woods of Woods Supermarkets in Bolivar, Mo.
