Wine-vending Machines Planned for Pa. Grocers

Approximately 100 Pennsylvania grocery stores may soon be offering self-service wine-vending kiosks in a new program developed in partnership with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

According to published reports, the grocers involved include Giant-Carlisle, Wegmans Food Markets, Weis Markets, and Acme Markets. (KYW News Radio posted a list of the 100 proposed locations on its Web site at http://www.kyw1060.com/pages/5944310.php).

The vending machines to be used hold up to 500 bottles of 50 different wines, with assortments to be determined by location. In addition, the machines will be designed to prevent sales to underage purchasers or individuals with a blood-alcohol level at or above .05 percent.

According to the reports, a prototype will be piloted in Harrisburg early next year, and if it’s successful, the units will be in all 100 stores by summer.
