Zupan's Markets to Open First Puget Sound Store

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Zupan's Markets, based here and with five gourmet grocery stores in Portland, Ore., will open a store at the new Washington Square complex in Bellevue, Wash.

The store, slated to open in 2009, will be the grocer's first Puget Sound-area location, according to a local press report.

Zupan's is not alone. Other neighborhood food retailers catering to gourmet or specialty tastes are Whole Foods, Larry's Market, and QFC's flagship store. At a projected 16,000 to 20,000 square feet, the Zupan's location would be the smallest store in the area. The store will hire about 100 to 120 associates, Zupan's director of marketing and advertising, Don Ramey, told the King County journal.

In addition to such features as fresh baked goods, imported and domestic cheeses and wines, all-natural fresh meat, party trays, and local seasonal produce, Zupan's provides cheese and wine stewards and tasting chefs.

Zupan's selected the Bellevue site because of its upscale demographics along with its location within the Washington Square complex, which is scheduled to include as many as five 20-storey-or-higher condominium towers, a boutique hotel, street-level retail shops and restaurants, and a high-rise office building that could be the same height to the city's tallest building in nearby Lincoln Square.
