15 Stores Reopen Under Tops Banner

Tops Markets, LLC yesterday held grand reopenings for 15 locations formerly owned by the Penn Traffic Co. and now operating under the Tops banner.

The new Tops-branded stores are 14 former Quality Markets stores in western New York and northern Pennsylvania and one former P&C store in Elmira, N.Y. Senior Tops company officials, district and store managers, and local community officials and charities attended the reopening ceremonies, which revealed capital improvements planned for each store as part of an overall two-year $90 million company-wide program, as well as donations made on behalf of the chain to various local charities through the company’s “Living Here. Giving Here” community partnership initiative.

“The entire Tops team has worked very hard to ensure our new store customers will have a more enjoyable shopping experience as they see the many changes in the setting, amenities, friendly service and promotional grocery items that our neighborhood stores will offer,” said Frank Curci, president and CEO of Williamsville, N.Y.-based Tops. “And we want to be active members of the local community.”

According to Curci, planned improvements will vary by individual store and will include a wider variety and selection of shoppers’ preferred brand products; the addition of bakery, deli, meat and healthy and organic food departments where needed; the rollout of the Tim Hortons coffee service; and the overhaul of store exteriors and interiors.

The Quality Markets and P&C stores were part of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court-approved acquisition of a majority of Penn Traffic’s assets by Tops that wrapped in late January. Tops said in early May that it would rebrand all of the former Penn Traffic stores to the Tops banner through the end of 2010.

Tops operates 131 full-service supermarkets — 126 company-owned and five franchise locations — and employs over 13,000 associates.
