Big Produce Highlights Big Y World Class Market to Open Today

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The 60,000-square-foot Big Y World Class Market set to open today in Ellington, Conn. boasts some features new to the family-owned chain, among them a more prominent produce department, and a 30-foot-wide "air door."

"There are subtle differences everywhere," Ellington store manager Mathieu D'Amour, son of Big Y chairman and c.e.o. Donald, told the Manchester, Conn. Journal Inquirer earlier this month. "Every store we build, we try to learn from our previous store and make adjustments."

D'Amour particularly noted that "produce is more of an impact department in this store," with over 700 types of fruits and vegetables, including an expanded selection of organics. As a matter of fact, the company makes mention of "Big Y's farmers market spilling out of the entrance of the store," in addition to "[a] full-service floral department [carrying] a large assortment of bouquets, arrangements, gift ideas, balloons and garden baskets."

D'Amour also said that the store would employ the air door, an open space heated in winter and cooled in summer, through which carriages and shopping carts could pass.

Another new amenity is the World Class Sandwich Tour, a variety of fine sandwiches made fresh daily.

In common with other World Class Markets, the store will feature a pharmacy and an International Food Court with an eat-in cafe and a large selection of both hot and cold foods to go, as well as extensive perishables departments.

Big Y operates over 50 other stores in its market area of Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,200 employees.
