Big Y Bows Expanded Store in Guildford, Conn.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The conversion of the newly renovated 54,000-square-foot Guilford, Conn. Big Y to the grocer's World Class Market format will be celebrated with a flag-raising event on Nov. 2. Big Y World Class Markets carry a variety of specialty foods from Asia, Central and South America, Europe, and the Caribbean, an extensive selection of organic and kosher food, and top-quality local produce.

Guilford has had a Big Y supermarket since 1996, but in August 2005, a $19 million renovation began to increase the size of the store by 20,000 square feet and convert it into a World Class Market.

Said Big Y president Charles L. D'Amour in a statement: "Our commitment to our customers is to constantly improve the Big Y World Class shopping experience. We're pleased to be able to offer our customers in the Guilford area a more comfortable and easier shopping environment. We are especially excited about our new take-home offerings such as our own pizza shop, full-service butcher shop, a salad bar and expanded prepared foods, and our offerings of locally grown fruits and vegetables."

As well as the flag raising, which will feature the participation of local veterans, Big Y will mark the Guildford store's conversion by donating $500 to each of the seven schools in the community.

The store's hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and as the expansion created 60 new jobs, the location now employs 200 associates.

Other store features include an eat-in cafe, a free knife-sharpening station, an international cheese shop with over 200 domestic and imported cheeses, an enlarged seafood section, more World Classics selections in the deli, a brand-new floral shop, and a frozen food section that's over 50 percent larger than the size of the original.

Big Y currently operates 56 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, employing over 9,200 employees.
