Big Y to Open New Store in Wilbraham, Mass.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Big Y here said yesterday that it planned to open a 64,000-square-foot World Class Market and Pharmacy in Wilbraham, Mass in fall 2007. The store will be the New England grocery chain's 59th store, as well as the 15th in Massachusetts' Hampden County.

The project site encompasses about 12 acres of land. According to Big Y, an abandoned bowling alley building on the site will be razed, although an existing self-storage facility will be retained.

The proposed store, which will employ about 300 people, will offer such features as an International Food Court with an eat-in café; a broad assortment of foods to go, including rotisserie chickens, fresh cooked-to-order fish and chips, and heat-and-eat entrees; a wide selection of specialty foods, among them organic and kosher items; a full-service Butcher Shop; fresh seafood; and a produce department with over 500 products, including organics.

"We are excited to announce this addition to our Greater Springfield community of stores," said Big Y president and c.o.o. Charles D'Amour in a statement. "We look forward to expanding Big Y's World Class service, quality, and selection to shoppers with this new Wilbraham location." The store represents an investment of more than $10 million dollars in the local community.

One of the largest independently owned supermarket chains in New England, family-owned and -operated big Y currently operates 54 stores throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts, with over 9,000 employees.
