Big Y's Fresh Acres Market Sweetens Local Food Offering with Honey

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Mike Beaudry, manager of Big Y's Fresh Acres Market concept store here, has finally tracked down some local honey, from the Hampden County Beekeepers Association, to sell along with the other locally sourced offerings emphasized by the Fresh Acres Market format. Beaudry had been looking for locally produced honey since the store opened last October.

Beekeepers association president Tom Flebotte will supply the store with five SKUs of honey, ranging from an eight-ounce to a 48-ounce jar, starting Feb. 12.

Among the other local products available at the store are fruits and vegetables, soaps, sodas from Ludlow, and pasta sauces.

The store also features over 500 gluten-free products, which Big Y touts as the largest such selection in New England.

Additional features include an open-air farm stand, on-premise dry-aged all-natural beef, cooked-to-order shrimp, all-natural and organic cold cuts, 350 varieties of cheese, and prepared entrees by chef Mike Furtek, whose team is continually developing new recipes employing seasonal ingredients.

There is as yet just one Fresh Acres Market store in the 56-store chain, which operates in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
