Canadian Natural Grocer Capers Recognized for Employee Volunteerism

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada -- Capers Community Markets, a Canadian natural and organic foods retailer based in Vancouver, B.C., yesterday received the Volunteer Vancouver's annual Caring Company Award for employee volunteerism.

The award recognized the support Capers has given to local communities through its employees' voluntary activity and expertise, and the company's innovative efforts to raise funds for various not-for-profit organizations. Nominated by the YWCA of Vancouver, Capers was recognized with the award for the first time.

"We encourage our employees to support their choice of non-profit causes in the local communities around our stores, to create positive change in the areas of environment, hunger, and health," said Kurstin Leith, dir. of operations for Capers. "As a company, active involvement in the community is a value that has always been very important to us in the 20 years we have served Greater Vancouver."

Many of Capers' 340 employees volunteer for charitable organizations. Each Capers store has a volunteer-run giving committee that administers a monthly budget for food donations, gift baskets, and gift cards that benefit selected not-for-profit organizations. Capers pays employees their hourly rate (up to $12 per hour) to contribute up to 52 hours per year of volunteer service.

Capers Community Markets has three locations in Greater Vancouver, and plans to open four new locations in B.C. and two locations in Alberta in the next five years.
