Central Market Releases New Guides to 'Mindful Eating'

SAN ANTONIO -- Central Market, the upscale subsidiary of HEB here, is expanding a homegrown program of consumer guides to healthful eating, with four new printed pieces that detail and offer advice on salient health issues related to food.

In its e-newsletter this week, Central Market touted the additions to the "Mindful Eating" program, which had debuted in September with a guide to organic foods. "We've got four new user-friendly guides to help clarify some of today's most common dietary concerns," Central Market said.

The four topics are sugar, sodium, gluten, and kids' health. Each guide outlines the key points surrounding the issue, including considerable nutritional information in a format that is easy to understand; and how the issue might affect consumers' choices about food purchases.

"There's been lots of talk in the news lately about 'mindless eating' as the source of many of the nation's health problems," Central Market explained on the Web site. "We'd like to encourage the opposite. To us, Mindful Eating is simply making smart, informed choices that allow you to enjoy all that food has to offer."

Said Mary Brown Malouf, Central Market's director of publications and events: "When you fully understand the food you eat and how you eat it, making choices that support good nutrition without sacrificing pleasure come naturally and you'll find yourself unaffected by diet fads. Really paying attention to how well you eat is arguably more important to your overall health than obsessing over numbers and trying to follow the whims of nutrition in the media. Mindful eating makes sense."

The guides are available free at Central Market in-store information desks.
