Dillons To Open First Marketplace Format In Kansas

CINCINNATI -- Dillons, a division of The Kroger Co. based here, will open its first Marketplace store in Wichita, Kan., next spring, according to local reports.

The new Dillons Marketplace will be 110,000-square-feet, 30,000 more than the current Dillons unit on the site. Dillons spokeswoman Su-Ella McKinzie told the Wichita Eagle that the store will feature new multi-departments to provide a one-stop shopping experience. "It will be something like we've never seen in this city before and that Dillons have never done before," she was quoted as saying.

In announcing details of the replacement store, Dillons officials said the unit will offer a full-service grocery, including expanded fresh perishables and general merchandise, a Nature's Market with organic produce and natural remedies, a cheese shop, a sushi bar, a meat carving station and a drive-thru pharmacy.

New merchandise will be range from rugs, candles, and lamps in the home fashions section to decorator towels, shower curtains, and soap dishes at bed and bath. A furniture house will also offer desks, dining room tables and chairs, and framed pictures, while the new kitchen place will offer everyday and gourmet kitchen merchandise.

The new store will also include an indoor/outdoor cafe, an expanded beauty section and expanded non-food areas for school supplies, toys, books and magazine. The new unit will continue to house a Starbucks Coffee station.

Headquartered in Hutchinson, Kan., Dillons operates 109 stores in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Arkansas.
