Dorothy Lane Produce Receives Organic Certification

DAYTON, Ohio -- Dorothy Lane Markets here has received organic certification for its produce departments from the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association.

"We feel that because of the increase for the demand that exists for organic produce, it was an important thing for us to verify ourselves," Jose Manzano, Dorothy Lane's produce director, told a local business journal.

In order to be recognized as certified organic, retail produce departments must make sure all of their organic produce is prepared and packaged on sanitized surfaces, stored, displayed and bagged separately from conventional produce and be accompanied by proper documentation verifying that the products come from organic-certified farms.

The three-store operator, which will be required to renew its organic produce certification every year, said it has met the association's standards for several years, but didn't apply for certification until this year and needn't change anything in order to pass the certification test.

The Organic Trade Association and the U.S. Department of Agriculture regulate the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association.
