Food Lion Unveils Remodeling Handiwork in Md., Del.

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Food Lion here will unveil its latest round of makeovers, at 63 stores in Maryland and Delaware, later this week.

The Delhaize's subsidiary will also kick off a new promotional campaign, called, "Food Lion's Fresh Makeover Celebration."

"This is an exciting time for Food Lion and our customers, as we celebrate a fresh, new look, a greater selection of products, a new dedication to service and a renewed focus on delivering the freshest and best foods every day," said Gaelo de la Fuente, Food Lion's regional v.p. of retail operations.

"Since the start of 2005, we have worked hard to make our stores more attractive and provide an enhanced shopping experience. We have paid special attention to our fresh departments -- produce, meats and deli/bakery. The new and more inviting interior design signifies our commitment to offer the freshest produce, the best quality meats and an expanded selection in the deli and bakery, plus a far greater number of natural and organic products."

Food Lion units in the Baltimore area, Maryland's Eastern Shore, and Delaware have seen a steady stream of carpenters, electricians and painters over the last several months. Customers have watched their stores gradually be transformed week by week, as they. To celebrate the work's completion, each store will hold a grand "re-opening" ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m.

Much of the work focused on the fresh departments -- produce, meats, and deli/bakery -- which now have more items, a new design and layout, and new lighting and product fixtures. Providing a better presentation of the products, showcasing Food Lion's freshness and increased variety, was a primary goal of the remodeling work, said de la Fuente. More than 40 stores also have added the chain's Nature's Place natural and organic section.

"We want customers to find our fresh departments comfortable, colorful and enticing, and easy to shop," de la Fuente said. "At the same time, we have responded to customer requests for more natural and organic products and specialty items."

Other enhancements included: more international products; more specialty product lines, such as Cherchies, The Amish Collection, and Sun of Italy; re-designed grocery aisles; new customer service counters and checkout lanes; and a new décor package with new signs, graphics and colors and improved lighting.

Food Lion operates more than 1,220 stores and employs approximately 70,000 associates in 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
