Fresh Market Entering Indiana

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Fresh Market, a fresh-focused, privately-held food retailer based here, is embarking on new territory next month, as it enters the Indiana market on Feb. 2 with a new location in Carmel.

Fresh Market currently operates 44 stores in states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, and Virginia. The company has said it plans to open six to eight new stores each year.

The retailer's plans were revealed in an interview with an Indiana public broadcasting station. Its stores are typically 25,000 square feet, and are meant to create a sense of "old-world European markets under one roof." In a statement, the company described the atmosphere of its stores as reminiscent of an Italian marketplace with Italian tile floors, soft, incandescent lighting, and classical music.

According to the company, features in The Fresh Market's latest stores include:

-- Meat & Seafood - Old World Butcher shop featuring two-inch-thick steaks cut from Aged Hereford and USDA Choice beef; a selection of chicken, pork, lamb, and fresh seafood; meat cutters on duty at all times to accommodate custom orders and answer questions; and "Ready-to-Cook" items such as Chicken Cordon Bleu, Pinwheel Steaks, Beef Wellington, and Salmon Wellington.

-- Convenient Meal Solutions - Freshly-prepared entrees, side dishes, and salads. Specialties include rotisserie chickens, baby back ribs, twice-baked potatoes, tortellini salad, and pimento cheese.

-- Produce - Bountiful selection of the highest quality fresh produce, including selected organic items and fresh-squeezed orange juice.

-- Bakery - Gourmet selection of freshly baked breads (French, sourdough, European crusty style) and pastries, mouth-watering cookies, and premium desserts.

-- Deli - European style delicatessen featuring cheeses from around the world and a wide selection of domestic and imported deli meats.

Specialty grocery items include fine oils, sauces, spices, crackers, and salad dressings; and vintage wines, premium imported beers, and popular microbrews. A houseplant selection complimented by fresh cut stems and other gifts for the home is also featured. Additionally, Fresh Market offers sampling seven days per week.

The Fresh Market was founded in 1982 by Ray Berry, who opened a small store in Greensboro, N.C.
