Gerber Recalls Cereals Due to Choking Risk

PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- Baby food company Gerber here has issued a recall of about half a million eight-ounce packs of organic rice and oatmeal cereal because of babies could choke on the product.

According to Gerber, lumps of the cereal might not dissolve in milk or water, thereby posing "a potential choking hazard."

As well as the United States, the cereal was distributed in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, Gerber said on its Web site.

The organic rice UPC code is 15000 12504, while the organic oatmeal UPC code is 15000 12502.

Swiss drug company Novartis, which owns Gerber, said the recall was minor and would have no financial effect.

Novartis is in the process of selling Gerber to Nestle, the world's largest food company.
