Giant Debuts Replacement Store In Historic D.C. Neighborhood

LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food LLC, this morning christened a new full-service food and pharmacy combination store at the historic Tivoli Theatre site at 1345 Park Road, N.W. in Washington, D.C.

The 52,563-square-foot unit replaces a 38-year-old store at 3460 14th Street in N.W. Washington, which Giant closed yesterday.

Giant's e.v.p./g.m., Bill Holmes, said, "We are very excited about the opening of our new store in the District of Columbia, as the store will offer shoppers the very latest in merchandising and customer services. We look forward to serving the community at our new Tivoli store and continuing to build upon our reputation as a good corporate citizen in the city."

The opening of the new Giant is part of the restoration of the Tivoli theatre, a registered landmark that opened in 1924. The theatre closed in 1976 but reopened its doors last January with the grand opening of the Grupo de Artistas Latinoamericanos (GALA) Hispanic Theatre. The new store and converted theater are part of a $37 million project that aims to create significant economic opportunities in the Columbia Heights neighborhood surrounding the Tivoli.

The store includes a "Relax, Renew, Revive" health and beauty care department, a large international food section, an extensive selection of beer and wine products, a Staples brand home and office supply section and a new value aisle featuring advertised sale items.

A Nature's Choice health section features soy milk, beverages, snacks, condiments, cereals and nutritional bars. Many of the items will be featured with special grand opening low prices.

The ethnic food section contains a variety of Hispanic, Thai, and Oriental food selections, as well as ready-to-eat Thai entrees, Oriental condiments and other Hispanic staples featured under Giant's new Mi Casa brand.

The produce department features a complete variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, including locally grown, specialty, and organic produce. A salad station and soup bar feature over 85 items, plus ready-to-eat "Step Saver" fruit and salad items, and a complete selection of packaged salads.

The service deli features gourmet salads, an enhanced Italian foods section, the popular "Touch of Honey" rotisserie chicken and customized sandwiches. Other highlights include a hot food bar, an appetizer bar featuring chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and jalapeno peppers. Customers can also choose from over 300 varieties of gourmet cheeses.

The in-store bakery offers an assortment of freshly baked products including over 15 varieties of artisan breads, plus rolls, cakes and other items that are baked on the premises by an experienced baker. A new gourmet cookie case features hand decorated specialty message and character cookies.

The floral department features a wide variety of fresh cut flowers and green flowering plants, as well as helium-filled balloons. Customers may also order floral arrangements for weddings and other special events.

The seafood department features a lobster tank and a large assortment of seafood and fish, which will be filleted upon request. Lobster and shrimp will also be steamed upon request at no additional cost.

The meat department is staffed by professional meat cutters and offers a complete selection of USDA Choice beef, Grade A poultry, marinated meats and fully prepared dishes. Such items as marinated beef kabobs, stuffed pork chops, and stuffed flank steaks are offered fully prepared and ready to cook through Giant's "Step Saver" program.

The new Tivoli Giant Food is the chain's 203rd supermarket, 175 of which feature full-service pharmacies throughout its D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey marketing territory.
