HEB Renovating Store in Waco

SAN ANTONIO -- An HEB store in Waco, Texas is undergoing a $1.3 million, three-month-long remodel to expand some existing departments and add three new ones, Healthy Living, Card & Party, and Texas Backyard. After the renovation, the store's Chinese Kitchen, however, will be a thing of the past.

HEB relied on customer opinion and management and employee input, to help guide its renovation plans. "We'll have a lot more products in the building, with a heavy emphasis on fresh products and healthy-living products," store manager Bill Davenport told the Waco Tibune-Herald. "We get a lot of requests in those directions."

According to the Texas grocer, the store's bigger coffee bar will offer shakes, malts, and smoothies, while an expanded deli will carry a range of fresh salads and made-to-order grilled panini sandwiches. It will enlarge the dairy and produce sections, installing upright cases that will permit the departments to display more items. The produce department will also receive more floor space.

Of the new sections, Healthy Living will feature bulk foods and organic and natural items, including HBC products, while Texas Backyard will offer general merchandise such as outdoor plants and patio furniture.

The store, which before the renovation measured nearly 100,000 square feet, originally opened in 1997. HEB officials were not available to disclose what the store's new square footage will be.
