Horizon Organic Introduces School Lunch Programs
BOULDER, Colo. - Horizon Organic Holding Corp. is spearheading an organic lunch program for schools to offer children and parents alternatives to traditional cafeteria food menus. The initial launch of the program is being tested starting this month in 12 Palo Alto, Calif., area elementary schools.
As one of the first school districts in the nation to provide organic lunch options, the Palo Alto Unified School District will be offering meals that contain organic food items, such as lasagna and bean burritos, as well as Horizon Organic single-serve milk.
"We are hoping this is the beginning of a nationwide movement to change the way our children are eating by offering healthy, organic lunches to students," said Jesse Cool, an organic chef and member of Palo Alto's Healthy School Lunches Committee. "Parents and children have been asking for better tasting meals as well as healthy organic lunch options for quite some time. With the launch of this program, not only are children going to realize how delicious organic food really is, but parents can feel confident that what their child is eating is safe and naturally wholesome."
A spokesperson for Horizon said similar school lunch programs are being introduced nationwide as parents show more concern for healthy eating, particularly in light of the obesity epidemic among children. "Right now it's a tough pilot program. But we're hoping that with the implementation of organic standards in October, there will be a lot more awareness among parents and children," she said.
