Lunds & Byerly's Boosting Private Label Offering

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lund Food Holdings, Inc. here is gradually introducing a more extensive private-label program, including a value-priced offering, according to a report in the Minneapolis Business Journal. Lund Holdings did not return calls placed by Progressive Grocer yesterday seeking confirmation.

The upscale supermarket retailer, which operates eight Lunds, 12 Byerly's, and three Rick's Markets in the Twin Cities and surrounding area, is rolling out the new products storewide at Lunds and Byerly's, according to the report. Lunds and Byerly's currently carry branded products under their own banners, but the new line combines the names and introduces three distinct value levels.

The top tier, featuring premium products, will carry the combined "Lunds & Byerly's" label and will include some of Lunds or Byerly's existing products. The middle tier will not use the stores' names, but will include specialty categories such as organics. The bottom tier, designed to appeal to more price-conscious shoppers, will feature mostly dairy and shelf-stable items.
