Martin's Food Market Opens in Waynesboro, Va.

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Martin's Food Market held the grand opening of a 66,000-square-foot store yesterday in Waynesboro, Va. The retailer is a division of Ahold USA.

"Martin's is a step towards the next generation of supermarkets, offering customers quality, selection, and savings for a total value shopping experience," said store manager Matt Guch in a statement. "The time-sensitive customer will find the latest in supermarket technology and innovative store amenities to provide solutions to their everyday shopping needs."

The in-store technology at the new unit includes EasyShop, which allows customers to use a hand-held device to scan and bag items in their cart as they shop, while keeping a running total of their purchases before checkout; EasyScan, which let shoppers use self-scanning units to speed up the checkout process; EasyWeigh, which permits customers weigh their produce, bulk food and other items; and Martin's self-service Shopping Solutions kiosks, located throughout the store, which enable shoppers to perform such tasks as printing out recipes, placing deli orders, and refilling prescriptions.

The same package of in-store technologies is already up and running in some Giant-Carlisle stores.

Among the other amenities at the new store are the Tree House at Martin's, featuring an on-site child play area where qualified staff supervise children ages 3 to 9 in a setting offering games, toys, and computers; and a Martin's gas station next to the store parking lot.

The store will carry more than 3,600 frozen, dairy, grocery, and special diet selections, including a gluten-free products, in the Nature's Promise Marketplace, a dedicated section for natural and organic items. Other departments also have been set aside with their own look and feel, including the Neighborhood Drugstore at Martin's, where shoppers can not only fill prescriptions, but also buy name-brand HBC products, Hallmark cards, toys, books, CDs, and DVDs; the Corner Bakery Shoppe, featuring upscale desserts, artisan breads, award-winning doughnuts and photo-imaging cakes; the Butcher Shoppe, offering Certified Angus Beef and ready-to-cook products, a full-service floral department, the Seafood Market, which boasts an on-site lobster tank with free steaming while you wait; the Market Square Deli, stocked with an assortment of deli meats and freshly prepared salads.

The customer service area provides Western Union transactions, money orders, postage stamps, an ATM, lottery tickets, and bill payments, among other services.

The 24-hour Waynesboro Martin's employs about 200 full- and part-time associates. Martin's Food Markets, operated by Ahold-owned Giant-Carlisle, has 24 stores in Maryland, western Pennsylvania, New York, and West.
