My Organic Market Installs 40 Skylights in New Store

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Community-based independent natural and organic food retailer My Organic Market (MOM's) here yesterday completed installation of 40 energy-saving reflective skylights in its new store in Columbia East, scheduled to open in early October.

The Solartube skylights are part of a growing list of actions taken by the local chain, which serves the Baltimore-Washington region, in its environmental restoration initiative. The refracted light is expected to provide significant energy savings and provide a higher quality working and shopping environment compared to standard retail lighting, according to the retailer.

"There is no better light than light from the sun," said Scott Nash, Founder and c.e.o. of MOM's. "It not only requires less energy from the grid, which saves on energy costs and prevents pollution, but it has been proven to improve morale among both employees and customers in retail businesses. It's free light in its most natural form. Every roof should come equipped with skylights."

According to the California Public Utilities Commission's Energy Design Resources website, an average grocery store could save about $16,000 a year (or 32 cents per square foot) in operating costs by utilizing skylights.

MOM's currently operates three stores in the Baltimore - Washington area including: Rockville, M.D., College Park, M.D. and Alexandria, Va., with plans to open a fourth store in October 2006 and a fifth store in Frederick, M.D. in early 2007.
