Pathmark Opens Second Store in Harlem

CARTERET, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores, the Northeastern retailer known for its commitment to urban marketing, has opened a second supermarket in New York City's Harlem neighborhood. The new store, located at the intersection of 145th Street and Bradhurst Avenue in Central Harlem, comes just over five years after Pathmark built its first store in East Harlem, located on 125th Street.

The 42,000-square-foot store officially opens on Jan. 21 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m. It is part of a mixed-use development, which includes the construction of 125 high-rise apartments above the supermarket.

The store will provide an important service to the Bradhurst neighborhood, according to Pathmark. It will be open seven days a week, 24 hours each day, and will offer home delivery service. The store is authorized to accept food stamps and participate in the WIC nutrition program, and will also offer Western Union, money orders, and lottery.

Additionally, the Bradhurst Pathmark will include a full-service branch of Carver Savings Bank, open seven days a week, and a Pathmark pharmacy staffed by a bilingual pharmacist to foster communication with the area's significant Spanish-speaking population.

Pathmark will include a wide selection of the grocery, perishable, and health and beauty care items. For example, the produce department will include Hispanic items, as well as soy and organic products. The fresh seafood department will offer fillets, along with other key items such as Geisha squid, Conch, Margaritaville Island Lime Shrimp, and Jaiba Supremo Imitation Crabmeat. Hot prepared foods will be highlighted in the service deli department, while the dairy will feature Lactaid milk, and frozen foods will have an expanded section of Big Deal offerings.

Pathmark said it received nearly 3,000 job applications for employment at the store, and will open with nearly 150 associates on staff. Over 80 percent of the associates working at Bradhurst Pathmark reside in nearby neighborhoods, according to Pathmark.

Commenting on the opening of the Bradhurst store, Pathmark c.e.o. Eileen Scott said, "This store will provide the same amenities and great customer service that all Pathmarks offer. Our store team will strive to go beyond the expectations of our customers. We value and appreciate their loyalty. I am confident that Bradhurst Pathmark will be as successful as its sister store in East Harlem."

As part of the grand opening celebration, the company is donating $5,000 to local community organizations.

Pathmark operates 143 stores in the New York-New Jersey and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
