Retail Divisions Drive Planet Organic's 103% Sales Growth

Natural products company Planet Organic Health Corp. saw a 43.2 percent growth in same store sales for Planet Organic Market, its Canadian retail division, for the quarter ended March 31.

Total revenues increased to CAN $13.4 million (US $13.5 million), up from CAN $9.3 million (US $9.4 million) for the same quarter last year.

Sales for Mrs Green's Natural Markets, the company's U.S. division, increased by 11.4 percent, or CAN $11.6 million (US $11.7 million), up from last year's CAN $10.4 million US $ 10.5 million.

Consolidated sales for all Planet Organic divisions -- of which Planet Organic Market and Mrs Green's Natural Market account for 85 percent of total revenue -- were CAN $29.7 million US $29.9 million), up 103 percent from last year's CAN $14.6 million (US $14.7 million).

Edmonton, Alta.-based Planet Organic is a natural products industry company, comprising manufacturing, distribution, and retail divisions. It operates nine natural food supermarkets throughout Canada under the Planet Organic Market banner and 11 natural food supermarkets in the U.S. under the Mrs Green's Natural Markets banner. The company also operates 48 natural health outlets under the Sangster's Health Centre banner and eight natural health outlets under the Healthy's banner.

@text:Just in time for the official start of summer, Giant Food, LLC and The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. said last week they were reducing prices on over 40 ice cream cone and topping products, including rainbow sprinkles, sugar cones, butterscotch toppings, and hot fudge sauces.

"Customers can feel good knowing that they can buy their favorite ice cream cones and toppings at Giant at new low prices every day," said Giant Food/Stop & Shop consumer advisor Andrea Astrachan.

The price reductions are a continuation of the company's ongoing "Low Prices Every Day" initiative, which so far has slashed the prices of thousands of other products in the store, among them HBC items, produce, dairy products, cookies and crackers, salad dressings, condiments, frozen foods, water, coffee, juices, cereal, pet foods, paper goods, baby care products, and household supplies.

Giant Food, based in Landover, Md., operates 184 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs about 21,000 associates. Included within the 184 stores are 165 full-service pharmacies. Stop & Shop, based in Quincy, Mass., employs over 59,000 associates and operates 378 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, New York and New Jersey. Both banners are owned by Ahold USA.
