Spartan Outlines Plans for Paw Paw Store

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores here is gearing up for a $3 million remodeling of the Felpausch Food Center Paw Paw location at 847 South Kalamazoo St. The project will be the third major remodeling of a Felpausch supermarket since Spartan Stores acquired the chain, according to press reports.

"We believe a modern state-of-the-art supermarket demonstrates our commitment to the Paw Paw community, and will be a more service- and customer-focused alternative to supercenters," Craig C. Sturken, Spartan's chairman and chief executive was quoted as saying.

Preliminary plans call for temporary relocation in mid-January of the Felpausch Food Center operations to the former Paw Paw Shopping Center unit at 308 East Michigan Ave., to accommodate the remodeling of the current location. Pharmacy services at the current Felpausch site will continue there throughout the remodeling and feature the addition of a convenient drive-up pharmacy window.

The remodeling and reformatting plan calls for:

--Expanded produce and floral departments
--Expanded natural and organic products throughout the store
--New meat and seafood department
--Relocated pharmacy with drive-up window for customer convenience
--Expanded wine department
--New exterior facade and interior decor throughout
--New technology including self-scan checkout options and improved reverse vending
--Expanded HBC department
--Remodeled in-store bakery and deli department

Following the construction phase, operations will move back to the new supermarket, which will celebrate a grand reopening as a Family Fare Supermarket.
