Spartan Stores Breaks Ground for New Family Fare Prototype

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Spartan Stores here will break ground tomorrow morning for the 25th Family Fare supermarket, at a site that had been the Allendale Christian School in Allendale, Mich., as the school prepares to relocate to a plot directly behind the store. The 49,000-square-foot prototype full-service supermarket and grade school were both made possible by the cooperation Spartan and school officials, township planners, and developers.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Spartan will present a check to the Allendale school capital campaign to help fund development of the new school. The store is scheduled to open in during fall 2007.

"This is a true win-win for both organizations and for the citizens of Allendale Township," said Craig C. Sturken, president and c.e.o. of Spartan Stores, in a statement.

The Allendale store will be the prototype for future Family Fare units, with double the square footage. The store's features include:
--A full-service pharmacy with a convenient drive-up window
--A new Quick Stop fuel and convenience center featuring the latest technology to enable customers to redeem Family Fare promotional offers at the pump
--A full-service expanded meat department
--Fresh seafood delivered daily
--Over 600 produce items, including organics
--A full-service deli featuring salads, domestic and imported cheeses, and prepared foods
--International foods, including Asian, Indian, Caribbean, and Eastern Mediterranean
--A floral department
--The addition of energy-efficient lighting, heating and other equipment

General contractor A.J. Veneklasen, architect Paradigm Design, project developer Space Source, and site engineer Nederveld Associates, Inc. are working on the project with the Midwestern grocer.
