Supervalu Closing Clarksville, Ind. Bigg's; Expanding Save-A-Lot In Pacific Northwest
MINNEAPOLIS -- Supervalu, based here, will close its Bigg's supermarket in Clarksville, Ind. this weekend amid intensifying competition in the market, according to local reports.
Bigg's, the Cincinnati-based division of Supervalu Inc., is closing the 15-year-old underperforming Clarksville store, which employs 50, to focus on its 10 remaining locations, all of which are concentrated in the Cincinnati market.
Bigg's is currently in the process of converting its stores to include more services and wider variety to include more organics, gourmet, and prepared foods.
In other Supervalu news, the company will open four new Save-A-Lot stores in the Pacific Northwest in September, including two in the Portland, Ore. area, as well as stores in Tacoma and Pasco, Wash.
Save-A-Lot's entrance into the Pacific Northwest will be supported by a state-of-the-art distribution center in Portland, set to open in September. These openings represent the first phase of Save-A-Lot's expansion into the region.
