Supervalu says 'Mush,' Supports Global Warming Expedition
In a bid to raise awareness of global warming, Minneapolis-based Supervalu said it is supporting the Will Steger Global Warming 101 Ellesmere Expedition, a 1,400-mile trek by dogsled across Ellesmere Island that gets underway today.
"As one of the largest companies in the United States grocery channel, Supervalu is committed to preserving and protecting the environment," said Mike Erlandson, Supevalu's v.p./government affairs, who noted that the company will help sustain the expedition by supplying the team with natural and organic food.
"Organic food has a decreased environmental impact on the earth," said renowned explorer and event organizer Will Steger, "so it's great to see a company with Supervalu's reach so committed to environmental sustainability."
A leader in protecting the environment, Supervalu promotes customer involvement in its recycling programs and energy reduction usage efforts in its stores and offices.
The retailer's environmental stewardship council, ValuEarth, studies, recommends and oversees ways in which the company can minimize its environmental footprint. The company also remains active in FMI's Sustainability Task Force, FMI's Energy and Technical Services Committee and recently entered the EPA's GreenChill Partnership, which pledges to promote green technologies, strategies and practices that protect the ozone layer and reduce greenhouse gases.
