Weis Expansion Run Hits Home

SUNBURY, Pa. -- Weis Markets last week embarked on a 10,000-square-foot expansion and extensive remodel of the North Fourth Street store in its hometown here, the latest step in an ongoing $91 million cap ex program.

"Our Sunbury store is receiving the supermarket equivalent of a complete makeover," Weis spokesman Dennis Curtin told the Sunbury Daily Item, of the plan for the North Street Store. "This remodel and expansion will incorporate many of our superstore design features and will give our customers greater variety and choice."

According to Curtin, the store's expansion, which is scheduled to wrap up by spring 2007, will stretch the unit to 61,000 square feet. The remodeled location will feature such amenities as an eight-pump Gas-n-Go fuel station in front of the store, a broader assortment of organics, an improved produce section, a bigger seafood department, extensive perishable offerings, and a fresh interior decor.

The store will remain open throughout the renovation process, the company said.

Weis Markets has also bought the site of a former Wal-Mart in Kelly Township, Union County, to make room for a 16,000-aquare-foot expansion of the north side of its Lewisburg, Pa. store. The expansion will provide space for a larger produce department, additional dining space for prepared foods, and, possibly, a bigger garden department.

As well as the Sunbury expansion, the regional grocer, which in April said it would devote $91 million to capital expenditure costs, has plans to construct six superstores, four replacement units, 15 additions, and 17 remodels; and also new technology purchases and the continued upgrade of company processing and distribution facilities.

Capital expenditures for the first half of the year totaled $49.9 million compared to $20.8 million in 2005, the company said in its latest quarterly report.

Weis Markets operates 158 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and West Virginia. The company additionally owns and operates SuperPetz, a pet supply superstore chain with 31 locations in 10 states.
