Whole Foods Fills New Global SVP Slot

Natural/organic grocer Whole Foods said it has promoted its Southern Pacific regional president, Michael Besancon, to the newly created position of senior global vice president of purchasing, distribution and marketing.

As of Sept. 22, Besancon is reporting to co-presidents and chief operating officers A.C. Gallo and Walter Robb.

Besancon has more than 14 years experience working at Whole Foods Market, and in all is a 38-year veteran of the natural and organic foods arena. He was president for the Southern Pacific region for more than seven years where he oversaw operations, marketing and real estate development for stores in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada and Hawaii.

Besancon began his career at Whole Foods Market in 1994 as director of purchasing for the Southern Pacific region. Prior to joining Whole Foods Market, he worked in many areas of the natural products industry and even owned his own all-vegetarian natural foods store and restaurant, which still operates today.

Besancon also chairs Whole Foods' National Green Mission Task Force, which under his chairmanship has secured the largest renewable energy credit purchase in U.S. history to offset 100 percent of electricity at all Whole Foods' stores in the U.S.
