Whole Foods to Treat Mom Like a Queen

Leading natural and organic foods supermarket Whole Foods Market has several special promotions lined up for Mother's Day, including the introduction of Whole Trade Guarantee roses by the dozen, and a Camembert and Champagne pairing just for moms.

"Whole Trade Guarantee gives shoppers a way to help ensure a safe and healthy working environment for farm workers," said Karen Christensen, global produce coordinator for Whole Foods, in a statement. Whole Foods pays an additional premium to community development funds for rose farm workers who collectively decide how to use the money, the retailer said. Projects have included scholarships for children, housing, schools, and micro-enterprises.

Whole Trade Guarantee rose dozens will retail for $19.99 this Mothers' Day, Whole Foods said. These premium roses are from farms in Ecuador, where the climate and rich volcanic soils are considered ideal for growing roses. They are also Fair Trade Certified by TransFair USA.

Whole Foods Market launched the Whole Trade Guarantee a year ago. It is a buying program that brings together a set of strict criteria for products from developing countries to ensure exceptional quality product, more money for producers, better wages and working conditions for workers, and sound environmental production practices.

In another salute to moms, Whole Foods said it has put together a Camembert and Champagne pairing especially for Mother's Day.

Celebrated for its award-winning distinctive flavors, Nancy's Hudson Valley Camembert, created by Old Chatham Sheepherding Company, is a rich and creamy sheep's milk and cow's milk cheese from New York's Hudson River Valley and is modeled on the traditional French methods for crafting Camembert. Whole Foods cheese and wine buyers have chosen the Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Extrem, a classic French sparkler made from 100 percent hand-selected Chardonnay grapes, to complement the Camembert.

"Whole Foods has picked the crème de la crème for all of the mothers out there who deserve a little luxury," said Cathy Strange, global cheese buyer for Whole Foods. "When we tasted this delectable, soft-ripened cheese with the Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Extrem, we knew the best of the class of both of these products was represented just in time for Mother's Day."
