Wild Oats Launches Consumer Mag; Plans New Fla. Store

BOULDER, Colo. -- Eating well for healthy aging, organic farming, winter skin care, and natural pet food are among the topics covered in a new free consumer publication launched yesterday by natural and organic foods retailer Wild Oats Markets, Inc., based here.

The retailer said it developed the publication, called Wild Oats Magazine, to educate shoppers on how to live healthy and happy lives by making small, everyday changes in diet and lifestyle, and to showcase natural, organic, and gourmet foods and healthy recipes. The magazine, to be distributed in stores, will also feature articles on health and wellness, food trends, the environment, locally grown foods, and social responsibility.

"Our Wild Oats Magazine is a first-class custom publication that brings the adventurous, sensory experience of shopping at Wild Oats into consumers' homes," said Laura Coblentz, v.p. of marketing for Wild Oats. "Wild Oats is a resource to our customers and this magazine is another way we can provide our customers with useful information to help them eat well, live well, and feel great."

The magazine is published by El Segundo, Calif.-based Active Interest Media, Inc.'s Healthy Living Group, which also publishes Kroger's Optimum Wellness.

In other news, Wild Oats said it plans to open a 30,000-square-foot store in Naples, Fla. on Jan. 24, the chain's first in the city.

The Naples Wild Oats will feature natural and organic foods, dietary supplements, household and body care products, a full-service meat and seafood counter, and fresh bakery and deli departments.

The chain said the store's 4,000-square-foot produce department will offer more than 200 organic produce items, as well as a selection of fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers. The department will also offer exotic and hard-to-find produce items, according to Wild Oats, including more than 15 varieties of tropical fruits, 13 different types of lettuce and 14 kinds of fresh tomatoes, from Roma to vine-ripened.

Wild Oats operates 110 natural foods stores in 24 states and British Columbia, Canada. The company's banners include: Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, Henry's Marketplace, Sun Harvest, and Capers Community Markets.
