Wild Oats Named One of Top 100 Best Corporate Citizens
BOULDER, Colo. - Wild Oats Markets, Inc. was named the 19th leading company on Business Ethics magazine's annual ranking of the top "100 Best Corporate Citizens" for 2003.
Business Ethics, a publication targeting socially responsible businesses, bases its rankings on quantitative measures of corporate service to seven stakeholder groups: stockholders, employees, customers, the community, the environment, overseas stakeholders; and women and minorities.
"We are extremely honored to be selected as a top corporate citizen," says Perry Odak, president and c.e.o. of the 102-store natural food chain, which has locations in 25 states and British Columbia. "Wild Oats is passionate about supporting the communities in which we do business and are committed to protecting the environment and our families for generations to come."
As part of Wild Oats' mission to promote health and well-being among customers, employees, local communities and the environment, Wild Oats supports non-profit, local, and national organizations with small budgets and big hearts.
Among the ways Wild Oats supports local communities is its well-known Giving Program, including four "5 Percent Days" each year, whereby five percent of each store's total sales for the day are donated to a local nonprofit group. Additionally, to encourage recycling and reusing grocery bags, customers who bring their own bags to the store receive either a 5-cent refund or a Wooden Nickel for each bag, which is then donated to local nonprofit groups.
With each new store opening, Wild Oats donates $10,000 to a local nonprofit organization, and recent donations have funded organic community gardens in Long Beach, Calif., Portland, Maine, and Louisville, Ky., as well as playground equipment in Costa Mesa, Calif. when the company opened its newest Henry's Marketplace store. During its recent Albuquerque grand re-opening on March 29, the chain donated funds for a long-term gift to the Albuquerque community to improve, enhance and restore the New Mexico wilderness.
