Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc. has chosen a familiar source of inspiration for the name of its forthcoming Chicago area stores -- Mariano’s Fresh Market -- the first of which will open at 802 E. Northwest Highway at Kensington Rd. in Arlington Heights this summer and a second location that’s slated to open in the Chicago East Loop in 2011.
The name of the new banner, “is a nod to the Italian culinary heritage” of the Milwaukee-based Roundy’s chairman and CEO Bob Mariano, a Windy City native who for 27 years worked for the Chicago-based Dominick’s, prior to his departure as the latter’s CEO in 1998 when it was acquired by Safeway. Mariano has been at the helm of Roundy’s since June 2002, after its was acquired by the Chicago-based private equity firm, Willis Stein & Partners.
The full-service Mariano’s Fresh Markets will emphasize produce, meat, seafood, bakery and deli, with prepared foods for all day-parts, and will also highlight natural and organic products and a wide selection of homeopathic remedies. The stores will also feature a wine and spirits department, sushi bar, and Italian themed cafe featuring espresso, gelato, and panini are attractions that are sure to elevate the shopping experience to a new level.
“Mariano is thrilled to be back in Chicago and proud to once again provide the community with what he calls ‘the aisle by aisle selection and the value every shopper deserves,’” said Roundy’s, which pledged that its boss’s namesake banner stores “will epitomize [its] brand promise -- Shop Well. Eat Well. Live Well.”
Said Mariano: "We want our customers to know that Mariano's Fresh Market intends to be fully immersed in the fabric of our communities. We take this responsibility very seriously and are already developing plans to activate our long term dedication to the neighborhoods we will serve.”
Roundy’s operates 154 retail grocery stores and 88 pharmacies under the Pick 'n Save, Copps, Rainbow and Metro Market banners in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
